Salsa 101

Tuesday, August 02, 2005

Last night I went for salsa lessons with some of the AT chicas. I had a blast! I love to dance...I took ballet for 12 years when I was growing up, and I also took jazz, tap, modern & flamenco once I got into high school. But, in the last 12 years, my dancing skills have gotten a little rusty, partly from no time, partly from having a partner with two left feet and no sense of rhythm. We went to the beginner salsa class at Sandunga Dance Studios. We learned the basic salsa step, a pivot turn, the suzy-q, the cumbia (sp?) and the side-step. We took a short break ('cause we were workin' up a sweat) and then we did some partner work. April takin' a breather I danced most of the parnter work with a nice gentleman named Miguel, and he was a very good dancer. We practiced what we had learned, except us girls had to switch everthing around backwards...but that's because we're smarter I know. This was so much fun, and I will be going back for more! Parnter dancing with Miguel Then, this morning, I slept in. I was trying really hard to talk myself out of running, but it was almost robot-like in the way I got up, put on my running shoes and headed out the door. 40:45 run today, ~3.6 miles. Just stayed at home and ran around the 'hood rather than driving down to the track. Felt very slow and stiff from my long run this weekend. My right calf is so sore...I'm going to have to take a rolling pin to it later tonight because the stretching isn't helping.

  • I wish i'd learned to dance when I was younger like you, hence probably why you're still a fit one now.

When I had a go at salsa, there were too few men so I partnered with an older lady and my friend who is tall danced with a wee lady, what a sight we looked. Had more fun with Ceroc a few years ago and the conveyor belt of blokes, although I tended to end up with the stinky ones with the wandering hands...nice

  • I just removed the 'double' post. :) Last night we had more ladies than men as well. The instructor was dancing the male role, but we were still short about 5 guys. Come on lads, shake a tail-feather!

  • Salsa! That sounds fun. My husband and I took ballroom dancing in college. Like we'll actually use that anywhere!

Uhm...just hafta ask. Do you ever sleep??

  • Rolling pin? Now, why haven't I thought of that?! Hubby's calf is bothering him too, I'm going to make that suggestion.

I hope you are enjoying salsa!!

  • You go out and do all of the thing I just sit and think about doing. Your amazing!

  • What did they say about Ginger Rogers again? Something like, she did everything Fred Astaire did - but backwards and in heels.

    Sounds like a great time!

  • Dancing... now there's something I should think about taking up...

When I taught I would have to do the follower's part so much I got pretty good at it. I was told once I was having way too much fun at it, too. Hmph.

I doubt I could do it very well anymore. Tell you what, though, it made me a better leader when I did. I could feel the pretzels we guys tend to put the ladies through and figured out better ways to lead and make it easier on her.

  • I have always wanted to do that with my husband. Maybe someday. Looked like lots of fun!

  • It's great if your partner enjoys to dance too, neither of you have to be good, it's just fun and if you know even just a couple of moves you can have a go at being a dirty dancing duo...

  • I'm so jealous, I love to dance and never do it. I'd love to take lessons but my dance partner isn't into it. (sigh)

  • When I first saw the title, I thought you were going to be sharing a recipe with us :-P

    Looks like fun.
