Sunny and 86

Monday, November 07, 2005

Time to put away the winter gear that I only thought I was going to get to use this year. Bye Bye Fuzzy Sweater, maybe I'll get to wear you next winter. Hello Mr. & Ms. Shorts and Flip Flops. Long time no see. Really. I mean what, it's been like two weeks or something? At least I got to burn the dust off my heating coils once this season. *sigh* What is up with this!? Sunny and 86 today! I mean for reals people, this is November 7! N O V E M B E R. That's supposed to mean cool breezes, changing leaves, the air smelling like something other than sweat. You know, the month following October and preceding December? Being from Texas, well, it seems like good 'ol November is just another summer month. I recall spending Thanksgivings in Houston with my great-grandparents where we actually wore shorts because it was so warm. I also recall other Thanksgivings where we actually had snow on the ground (remember 11/25/93, Miami Dolphins 16 at Dallas Cowboys 14?). I mean, is it too much to ask for some consistency? Yesterday is a great example. I was going for a 2:35 half. A couple of factors caused that not to happen. The first? Well, on Saturday, Elle's soccer game was a forfeit because the other team only had three girls show up. So, we played a parent/kid scrimmage. I woke up yesterday morning with sore quads. Not good. The next? The temperature. Start line temp was around 62. Within an hour it had heated up to 66. And then to 70. Sounds nice doesn't it? Well, those really aren't prime racing temperatures. And around the lake, when there was no breeze and you were running directly into the sun? It felt a lot hotter. My final time? 2:39:59.4. Not too bad. An improvement over my previous half time of 2:54:23.50. Baby steps, right?

  • Boy, we must get the same weather. It's been in the 80's in the afternoon all week long.
For a week after Wilma, the temps were in the 60's and it was soooo nice!

So I hear ya big time, I want the sweater weather back!!!

Shaving 15 min off your time is nothin to sneeze at. Congrats!

  • Hey, kid. You just reminded me that I was going to open my windows the morning so my apt wouldn't be freezing when I get home. I know, it makes no sense, but seriously, my apt has been like 20 degrees colder sometimes. I've had to wear a sweater indoors and a t-shirt outside. Its nuts.

Anyway, congrats on the time. I don't know what a half is, and don't really feel like either looking it up online or through your blog, so I'll just say I'm happy for you.

    Who won the parent/brat game?

  • After running a 10K (half of a half marathon), I don't know if I could do an actual half, much less a whole marathon. It felt like my legs were going to fall off and my chest was going to explode. Yesterday, my legs were sore so I took the day off.
I know the time I finished it in was good for not having run that distance in about 9 years (in a race). I know I can improve on it though.
I agree, shaving even 3 minutes off is awesome. Shaving 15 off is leaps and bounds, not just baby steps.
    I'm proud of you!!

  • "remember 11/25/93, Miami Dolphins 16 at Dallas Cowboys 14"

    Yes. I do :-( Urgh.

Similar weather here. High around 80 today. I was thinking, for some reason, I have like twice as many long sleeved clothes as short sleeved. But I only get to wear the long sleeves maybe 3 or 4 months. And that time seems to shrink with every passing year.

  • This Texas weather is ridiculous. And people wonder why we get so excited at the mere mention of snow flurries.

  • Whoo hoo! Nice improvement on your race time. And I'm sorry but I don't feel the least bit sorry for you having to suffer with warm temps. We have trouble making up our minds in PA too. It's chilly (like 40's) in the a.m. and then may get up into the 60's-70's by afternoon.

  • Gotta love this Texas weather! There's alot of people around me that are sick and it's no wonder... Chilly in the morning and sweltering by the afternoon...

    Congrats on the run!

  • Respectable time in your half despite the heat and the day-after-the-scrimmagitis.

Go wash your car. That usually works for me when I'd like a storm.

  • hey! it's the same tempurature here!
If you put your winter clothes away, you'll make it get cold!

  • Do you get used to the hot weather over there?

    I'd burn like a tomato!

It's out with the woolies over in the UK, one thing I like about the colder weather is you can wear big boots!

  • Ugh! It's gonna be 80 degrees here again today. This weather is crazy.
Oh well, it'll probably be bitter cold come December.

  • Excellent job in the half! It was definitely warm, I was out on the mountain bike at LB Houston with a sleeveless jersey and working up a good sweat! I love it, it can stay this way as long as it wants.
