Setting the bar for cheap-o's everywhere

Friday, March 03, 2006

I heard a story recently. Someone was telling me how cheap their friend's boyfriend is. And he's not cheap out of neccessity. He makes plenty of money. How cheap is this guy? 1) He buys his clothes second-hand. Suits, shoes, jeans, everything. 2) He drives an old station wagon. You know, the kind with the wood panels on the side? Yep, that one. 3) He cuts his own hair. Huh? I mean how is that even possible? 4) He washes his hair with dog shampoo. Hey! At least he doesn't have fleas! Yes, I'm serious about the dog shampoo. This girl was at her boyfriend's house, was going to take a shower and finds dog shampoo. WTF?!?! Evidently, this guy's neighbors moved and gave him a box of stuff. Including dog shampoo. But they guy doesn't have a dog. He needs shampoo though, so he uses the dog shampoo! Am I just hoity-toity, or is this guy the King of Cheap?

  • Actually there are a couple of corrections: he buys really expensive suits and slacks but almost all of his shirts are second-hand from his ex-brother in law. And the dog shampoo thing was more of an accident - he usually buys Suave (and I'm so hoity-toity I'd rather use the dog shampoo instead of that crap!) :) But, in his defense, he's an amazingly wonderful guy and I want for very little from him. (And he's never going to get rid of that car!)

  • OK, so I had bad intel. Blame Nick.

  • Is Wal-Mart shampoo better than Suave? With Wal-Mart you won't spend on fortune on your hair, which is good because it's just hair!!

  • Yes, he is cheap. Sometimes I think Brian is cheap, but he at least picks quality over quantity. Meaning he'll let me buy something more expensive if the quality is in fact better than it's cheaper counterpart. And washing your hair with dog shampoo has got to be hard on your hair. Can you imagine?

  • It's JUST HAIR? It's JUST HAIR?! Are you CRAZY!!!!

  • actually, i think dog shampoo is more expensive than our shampoo. i priced it recently for our dog and here, it's more expensive. i was thinking of using our shampoo, well, baby shampoo, on our dog instead, cuz it would be cheaper. he might not feel the need to spend alot of money on himself, he may get more pleasure on spending it on others. or he could be just really cheap, or eccentric.

  • My understanding is that dog shampoo has a different ph content, it's made for canines, after all. There are also some dog shampoos that are toxic to cats!
If he finds himself with his tongue hanging out like Tim Allen in The Shaggy Dog, well, maybe it's time to switch shampoos! ;)

If he's an amazingly wonderful guy, as Justcara says, then I'd say he's a keeper and toss the man a steak bone. It's hard to find a great guy that makes ya happy! ;)

  • I feel bad now cuz I do use suave. But my hair's only about a half-inch long, so I don't need the whole "body and shine" thing.

In just a few more years, that car can be called a classic, then he can restore it and take it to shows :D

  • Not being cheap out of necessity is just wrong! I don't know how or why people get like that. However, I do have to say that my ex used cat shampoo for a while. He was thinking I was holding out with the really expensive shampoo. He had a nice, shiny coat too!

    I really dislike cheap!

  • Hey there, it's called THRIFTY. I might buy him a nice bottle of PRELL and do the old switcherino whilst using the facilities.

I drove a battlewagon for 2 years out of necessity. I sold it to my sister for $200. Now our family of four has 2 minivans. No wood grain. Go figure.

  • Speaking of the price of dog shampoo; My vet says use the same human shampoo equivalent, if the dog is flakey, use dandruff shampoo, if you want him silky use moisturizing shampoo, etc.

Maybe the guy is a non-consumerist. He's doing his part to save the planet.

  • So why is it ok to use this Mane‘n Tail shampoo but not dog shampoo?
"Mane‘n Tail products were originally developed for horses. Horses' hair is three times thicker than people hair. People started using the products to achieve the beautiful results they saw with their own horses' manes and tails.
Is he thrifty or cheap? If he is thrifty the guy will probably retire with more $$ than all of us here put together. If he's cheap, well, he's cheap!

  • BJs has some killer deals on cans of Alpo. Maybe that would float his boat.

He cuts his own hair. Huh? I mean how is that even possible?

I cut my own hair. It's short. Really, really short. My wife refuses to let me do the total bald thing. Maybe this summer.
Just wondering, if you scratch this guy's stomach, does he move his leg?

  • Wow lass, dog shampoo? Cuts his own hair? Hell, I thought I was cheap buying Suave combo shampoo/conditioner. I go to the old school barber that uses shears rigged with a flowbee and pay 12 bucks. I buy toilet paper from Costco in the jumbo 36 count package. I buy gas at the walmart.
I guess we all have to find ways to cut corners.

By Blogger mman, at 3/04/2006 11:02:00 AM

  • I use dog shampoo to wash my floors - oh wait! That was on accident and only once. It looks just like the bottle of Murphy's.

I know a few guys who cut their own hair. If it's just a buzz cut, that wouldn't be too hard. One guy tells me he does it because he started thinking unmentionable things about his hair stylist. Maybe your friend's friend might see that as a plus!

  • as long as he doesn't ask his g/f to grow her hair and stop shaving her legs... or try to wash HER with the doggy shampoo.. or try anything else in a doggy style... I guess its ok if hes a nice guy....

    By Anonymous Carol-anne, at 3/04/2006 06:12:00 PM

  • At least he washes his hair!

By Blogger Jean-Luc Picard, at 3/05/2006 12:12:00 PM

  • Hey man, I bet he's smiling all the way to the bank!

I'd start to wonder if he offered his guests doggie treats though!

By Blogger Marie, at 3/06/2006 07:54:00 AM

  • Not only is he cheap, but he's a freak too. The girl should run!!! Run as fast as she can!!!

By Blogger DeeJay, at 3/06/2006 08:51:00 AM

  • Wow, and I thought I had a couple of cheap friends.

When you say cuts his own hair, do you mean shaves it, or cuts it all the same length with clippers? Cause I've heard of guys doing that.

But not like a scissor cut. Surely. Maybe he puts a bowl on his head.

By Blogger Bone, at 3/06/2006 10:25:00 AM

  • That is funny. Dog shampoo is expensive!
