Civic Duty
For the first time ever, I got called to Jury Duty. And yes, lucky me! I got picked! This morning was a lot of 'hurry-up-and-wait' while this and that was decided before the panel was selected. So, it was pretty late before I was 'in' and we only listened to a little bit of testimony today. I get to go back tomorrow and hopefully the case will be done by the end of the day. I can't talk about any of the details of the case until it's decided. It's all very hush-hush. Have you ever been selected for jury duty? What kind of case did you get? Do you try to 'get out' of serving when you're called?

I got jury duty about 2 years ago but wasn't picked. It was a case where a husband beat up his wife and she ended up dying from her injuries.

I wanted to get picked. I only got paid like .50 a mile to the courthouse and back so my check was a grand total of about $15.

I have always gotten out of it... the last few times I have been called I have "had a small dependent child at home."

My girlfriend once was excused from a medical malpractice case because it involved a rare procedure that I had had done and she was too familiar with it for the defense attorney's comfort!
I wouldn't mind serving... if it were interesting!

I've been waiting my whole damned life to be on a jury. With my luck, I'll get some shitty case. I want a murder or a good, dirty, raunch divorce or criminal case. Yes, I need help.

I haven't been yet, and while I live in Italy (2 1/2 more years!) I don't think it's possible. By that time I'll probably be looking forward to it.

Yes, I served on jury duty once. I hear people complain about it all the time. I thought it was fun. I was only selected for one case however. It was a man making terroristic threats against his wife. The rest of the week I was there I read a book. Got paid full salary for my time there by my employer...problem??

I just got a form in the mail last week to determine if I was eligible for jury duty. But I'll be a full time student by then, so, I may not be able to do it this time round.
Have fun!!

Never been picked. But now because I'm married to a lawyer, it's less likely that I'd actually be picked for a jury. Damn. I was all ready with my "I heart legalized marijuana t-shirt"

No, but I kind of want to. When it's over you better post the details. I hope it was a good one.

I had to report for town court a few months ago. The guy took a plea at the last second -- he was there with his lawyer. He was there for "forcible touch" -- with his daughter-in-law! Eww.

Apparently (here at least) going to vote increases your odds of being summoned.
I'd like to serve. I once came close - I was in the final group and the lawyers were questioning us to see who they wanted. But it was a case about a 20 year old that climbed in a window to have (consensual) sex with a 14 year old, and I couldn't help but speak my mind. Apparently some lawyer didn't want to risk having me on the jury.

I've never done jury duty, it's very different over here though, if you're picked for jury duty then you're on the jury...there's no choosing from a big group! Hope this one does finish tomorrow and doesn't drag on for too long.

My Mom was chosen to be on a panel deciding the fate of a local police officer though. He had bene fired for allegedly spending hours and hours on duty at the local Texaco and diner. And he appealed. He was a minority, and that was a big part of their case, I think.
